Dr. Kenneth Spells, Superintendent
As I begin my term as superintendent of the South Bend Community School Corporation, I would first like to thank the Board of School Trustees for the trust they have placed in me. This is a time of great challenge, but also great opportunity. However, with the help and support of our employees and community members, I truly believe that together we can create a model urban public school system in South Bend.
During the interview process I was impressed with the passion for education and support for our schools shown by the Board, educators, parents, and community leaders. South Bend is very fortunate to have wonderful higher education institutions eager to work with us. I've already received many sincere offers of support and partnership, and plan to reach out to many community leaders in the next few weeks and months to further identify how we can partner for student success.
During my transition as I continue to learn more about what SBCSC is doing well and where improvements are needed, I plan to focus on:
1. Supporting teachers and principals.
2. Creating a central office that serves and supports schools.
3. Fostering a system-wide culture of transparency and accountability.
4. Marketing the district.
5. Engaging the community.
Behind every great public school system is a community that supports it. If you are already involved with SBCSC, I thank you. If you are not yet involved, either as an individual business or community organization, I invite you to begin now. True education reform will require bold and courageous action from our city leaders, our parents, our educators and our community working together. Together we can create a model urban public school system that is among the finest in the nation. It's what our students deserve.
