Swanson Traditional School in South Bend has been named a 2021 National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education. The award is given to schools based on their progress in closing achievement gaps or overall academic performance among student subgroups.

According to the National Blue Ribbon Program, 325 schools nationwide and six schools in Indiana were chosen for the award this year.

"It is an honor to be recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School," said Amy Troyer, principal of Swanson Traditional School. "This award would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the Swanson faculty and staff, who are enthusiastic about students learning and closing achievement gaps for our students. It also represents our school's strong, dynamic, and positive sense of community and parent involvement."

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program is an initiative of the U.S. Department of Education that recognizes private and public elementary, middle, and high schools whose students meet very high academic standards or make significant progress toward closing the achievement gap.

"We are so proud of the faculty, staff, and students at Swanson, and we are overjoyed that their efforts, as well as Amy Troyer's leadership, have been recognized," said South Bend Schools Superintendent Dr. Todd Cummings.

"Swanson Traditional has a wonderful, friendly and open culture that is focused on the achievement of all children, and the Blue Ribbon designation validates that." National Blue Ribbon Schools will be honored on November 4-5 at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. At the ceremony, Swanson will receive a plaque and flag to honor its Blue Ribbon status.
