Maritza Robles Dual Language Immersion Program

Our kids need to be ready for a modern, global world. To succeed, they must be great thinkers and problem-solvers. Through the Maritza Robles Dual Language Immersion Program, South Bend schools are focused on teaching students strong communication skills and the ability to adapt to a changing job market.

Dual language immersion programs are also highly effective for English Learners, students whose primary language is not English, assisting English Learners in English mastery while maintaining their primary language. Students who use their primary language while learning English are more likely to succeed academically.

Maritza Robles Dual Language Immersion Program educators are committed to providing children with a stimulating, learner-centered experience. Children in these programs can deeply engage in bilingual instruction to develop biliteracy and bilingualism and to participate in multicultural experiences that will prepare them to become open-minded, compassionate, and outstanding members of their communities.

Program History

Under the leadership of Angela Buysee (Principal, Warren Elementary) and Julia Cordova-Gurulé (Director, Bilingual Services Department), the first Spanish/English dual language immersion program (DLI) in the South Bend Community School Corporation was established in August 2017. The program was named in honor of the late Maritza Robles, a former SBCSC board member, former director of the Bilingual Services Department, and community advocate. In August 2019, a second Spanish/English DLI program began at Harrison Elementary.  Over time, the DLI programs have grown into inclusion at Edison K-8 School and Navarre Middle School, providing multiple options across South Bend.
