REQUEST TRANSPORTATION
Those wishing to receive transportation for students to and from school can call the Transportation department at 574-393-6000.
Transportation is provided to students attending their home neighborhood elementary school, regional middle school, region-wide program, or district-wide program.
We provide transportation to and from a maximum of two locations: home and one other site within the boundaries of the school the student attends. Fluctuating daily and monthly schedules, and work or business locations cannot be accommodated.
BUS SAFETY
Please review these bus safety rules with your child so they will be ready to have a safe trip
- Have students ready at their assigned stops at least five minutes prior to scheduled pickup.
- Wait until the bus is completely stopped with the stop arm extended before crossing the street, and cross at lease 10 feet in front of the school bus.
- If you drop something near the bus, tell the bus driver. NEVER try to pick it up as the driver may not see you.
- Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says it is okay to step on the bus.
- Get on the bus quickly and take your assigned seat. Assigned seats are required at all levels.
- Buckle your seat belt
- Cooperate with the driver about bus rules and safety issues.
- Remain seated, facing forward, keep your feet out of the aisle.
- No eating or drinking.
- Remain seated until the driver will tells you is is safe to leave the bus.
- Do not ask the driver for special favors or special stops. Drivers are obligated to run routes as written.
- No unauthorized adults or animals
- Ride your assigned bus. Students may ride home with another student if they have a signed note from a parent, confirmed by the principal or designee, and there is room.
Transportation is a privilege. Students who fail to comply with the rules may face disciplinary action. We use a point system; bus drivers assign points to students who misbehave on a school bus.
SBCSC has video recording cameras on our school buses. Video recordings are considered "educational records" and board policy strictly governs the access and use of any video recordings made.

WEATHER CLOSINGS
The decision to close schools due to inclement weather is usually controversial and very rarely pleases everyone.
First and foremost, safety of our children and staff is the overriding factor in any decision whether to close schools or not.
Ideally, the decision on closing should be made the night before; and if the information is available, that is when the decision will be made and appropriate notification provided as early as possible. Frequently, however, the weather turns during the night and a decision cannot be made until very early in the morning. Throughout the night, information is exchanged between and among various city agencies, the weather bureau, transportation departments, and other school corporations. A very elaborate communications system is in place and is triggered as early as 2 a.m. The final decision is usually made by 5 a.m., and that decision will be made by the superintendent on the basis of all available information provided at that time.
The serious problem occurs when the weather turns for the worse after 5 a.m. By that time, our vehicles are beginning to move and the notification process would be too late for parents to make other arrangements, especially those who are employed. In the many cases, the problems that are created as a result of a late notification are far more serious than those that occur when school is kept open even in bad weather.
Although the decision is ultimately the superintendent’s to make, please understand that it is based on information gathered from a variety of sources and from individuals who are out on the streets assessing the situation from every conceivable aspect. We hope you will agree with whatever that decision may be.

FAQs
Why is the bus late and why was I not called?
A variety of situations may cause delays, including traffic, road closures, weather, vehicle breakdowns, trains or late employees. Although we plan for some of these delays, it is impossible to anticipate all of them. It is also impossible to serve and notify parents of over 17,000 students each day of delays. Parents need to be prepared for delays by having alternative plans for the children regarding sitters, etc.
How will I be notified of a change to my child’s bus stop?
The routing department determines all changes of bus stops and bus stop times, following the current school board policies. All changes are submitted to each school, and any stop or time change is given to the affected student through the driver. This is usually done on the afternoon route. Parents need to watch for a pink notice from transportation.
I got home late (p.m) and the bus has not dropped off my child. The school is closed. What should I do?
If you are late or going to be late, it is important that you contact our dispatch center and a dispatcher will radio the driver of your situation. A driver will not wait more than the usual drop off time for you. If you are not home, the student will continue on the route and the driver will return after the last stop. If at that time there is no parent contact, the dispatch center is directed to call the police or Child Protection Services. It is repeated here that parents need alternative numbers for the driver to call in the even t of emergencies. Dispatch Number 393-5950.
What can I do to make my child’s bus ride successful?
Be sure your child has identification on his/her person or backpack, with phone numbers and a current address. Walk your child through the route, the stop and what to do in an emergency. Make sure you child knows his/her bus number. Teach your child not to get off the bus at other stops to play. This results in lost children, and frantic parents.
Whom do I call with questions?
Call the dispatch center at 393-7000. We suggest that you not call to ask when the bus is going to come. Please call only after the bus is at least 15 minutes late. When you call, have the following information ready: bus number, school, child’s name and bus stop location.
Will my child have the same bus number everyday?
Every effort is made to have the same driver for you child everyday. However, drivers are absent for many reasons and it is necessary to use our substitute drivers when this occurs. Depending on availability, you may have several different drivers, even on the same day. All drivers, including substitute drivers, have extensive training and thorough background checks. They have a minimum of 60 hours of on the road and classroom training before they transport students. They are drug tested on a random basis and undergo a DOT yearly physical.
