Middle Schoolers Explore STEM at Annual GE Aerospace Innovation Camp

Fifty middle school students from South Bend Community School Corporation recently took part in the 12th annual GE Aerospace Innovation and Discovery Camp at the University of Notre Dame, designed to foster continued interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, particularly among girls.

The week-long camp, led by GE Aerospace volunteers in partnership with Notre Dame, engaged grades 6-8 students in hands-on STEM activities including rocket science fundamentals, chemical engineering experiments with polymer cross-linking, wind power exploration, and competitive regatta challenges.

Daily programming featured 4-5 activities ranging from mastering principles of lift-off through rocket launches to creating homemade gummy worms via alginate chemistry experiments. Students also explored aerodynamics through wind power demonstrations and airplane design principles.

The Innovation and Discovery Camp represents a sustained commitment by GE Aerospace and the University of Notre Dame to develop the next generation of STEM professionals in the South Bend community
