SBCSC Announces Return of South Bend Empowerment Zone Schools

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC) is proud to announce the return of South Bend Empowerment Zone schools, effective for the 2024-25 academic year. This move marks a significant step in our commitment to educational excellence, community cohesion, and efficiency.

Established in 2019 through collaboration with the Indiana State Board of Education (IDOE), the South Bend Empowerment Zone encompassed Wilson, Warren, Harrison, and Coquillard Elementary schools, along with Navarre Middle School. South Bend Schools are grateful for the leadership of IDOE Secretary Dr. Katie Jenner and the work of the Department of Education in establishing this academic intervention.

"Returning the Empowerment Zone schools to the South Bend Community School Corporation reinforces our continued focus on the success of all South Bend students," stated Superintendent Dr. Todd Cummings. "This move allows us to consolidate resources, align strategic initiatives, and build upon the successes achieved under the Empowerment Zone framework."

SBCSC assumes responsibility for all administrative oversight, including academic programming, student services, transportation, and before- and after- school programs. This will ensure seamless operations and enhanced support for students, families, and educators within the district.

"We are confident that consolidating our efforts will strengthen educational continuity and enhance community engagement," added Dr. Cummings. "By bringing back the Empowerment Zone schools, we aim to sustain focus and the academic gains achieved, while promoting innovation, and providing equitable opportunities for each and every student."

Key benefits of this integration include improved communication and collaboration among stakeholders, streamlined resource allocation for continued efficiencies, and enhanced support for educators to foster student success both academically and personally.
