South Bend Schools Introduces New Student Cell Phone Directive

Effective July 1, 2026, South Bend Schools implemented a new Student Cell Phone Directive in accordance with Indiana law. The directive establishes consistent expectations for the use of personal wireless communication devices during the instructional day and will take effect beginning with the second session of summer school.

Under the directive, students' personal wireless communication devices—including cell phones, smartwatches, headphones, and earbuds—must remain powered off, out of sight in a locker room, and inaccessible during the instructional day unless an approved exception applies.

Limited exceptions are available for documented medical, educational, and accessibility needs, approved instructional activities, and emergency situations.

Parents and guardians who need to reach their student during the school day should contact their school's main office. School staff will ensure important messages are delivered promptly.
