SBCSC Adult Education English Language Learners

English Language classes offer opportunities for adults who are interested in improving their English skills.

The program's goal is to provide students with the language tools they need to participate filly in their family, workplace, and citizenship roles. We offer English classes for interested individuals aged 18 and older, who are seeking to develop their English language proficiency to better navigate life in the U.S.

Classes range from beginning literacy to advanced English. We teach listening, speaking, reading, writing, and critical thinking, while expanding students' knowledge of U.S. culture and workforce skills.

Coursework

Beginning literacy classes are for those who speak little or no English, emphasizing fundamental conversational speaking and reading skills. Students learn life skills like how to introduce themselves, navigate a bus route, rent housing, understand money, and talk to a doctor. Coursework includes U.S. history, government, culture and the roles and responsibilities of citizens.

Those with foundational language skills are given the tools needed to enter the workforce, attend career training programs or take college entrance tests such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

ELL students gain computer skills, learning to navigate Google Suite and use the internet in English. ELL students may be eligible to participate in workforce training offered in Adult Education.
