SBCSC Adult Education HSE Family Literacy Program

Parents prepare for the high school equivalency test while participating in a variety of family activities with their children in a HighScope early childhood development setting.

Parents must be accompanied by their preschool child (ages 6 months through pre-kindergarten)

Family Literacy

  • Adult Education focuses on improving students' skills in areas of reading, math, language, employability, and parenting.
  • Early childhood education is set in an intentional play environment, which helps children learn through hands-on experiences and exposure to language.
  • Family Literacy raises the literacy and educational levels of both parents and children and increases the quality of the parent-child relationship.

Afternoon Circle

Every afternoon we gather with our families for a time of singing and reading. There are many benefits of listening to stories and reading aloud:

  • It is pleasing for children and adults!
  • Very young children take their first steps as readers by interpreting the pictures.
  • Children have fun with new words and their language skills develop at an accelerated rate.
  • Oral language is positively impacted.

Coursework

HighScope's educational approach emphasizes "active participatory learning." Students have direct, hands-on experiences with people, objects, events, and ideas.

Children's interests and choices are at the heart of HighScope programs. They construct their own knowledge through interactions with the world and the people around them. Children take the first step in the learning process by making choices and following through on their plans and decisions.

Teachers, caregivers and parents offer physical, emotional and intellectual support. In active learning settings, adults expand children's thinking with diverse materials and nurturing interactions. Through scaffolding, adults help children gain knowledge and develop creative problem-solving skills.

PACT Time

Parents are invited to Parent and Child Together time (PACT) everyday in their child's classroom. PACT time is a daily opportunity for parents to join their child(ren) in fun one-on-one learning activities.

PACT time is also a great way for parents to:

  • Have fun with their child
  • Be part of what is happening in their child's classroom
  • Help their child(ren) get ready for kindergarten

PACT time parents are provided with tips for the best kind of "homework" for their preschooler.
