Adult Education

Adult Education classes are offered free of charge as part of Indiana's investment and commitment to all Hoosier adults, graduates and non-graduates alike. Adult Education prepares ALL participants to meet their individual educational, employment and career goals:

  • Prepare those who need to achieve their HSE, High School Equivalency (previously the GED)
  • Strengthen basic skills for various educational and workforce test/assessments and industry certifications
  • Focus on the core subject areas of math, reading, writing, science and social studies.
  • Integrate basic technology skills needed in today's business and post-secondary education environments.
  • Develop employment and post-secondary transition skills and career pathways for all

Eligibility

Adult Education is open to Indiana residents 16 years* or older who are not currently enrolled in a K-12 school.

Adult Education serves all of St. Joseph County, offering classes free of charge at convenient times and locations.

*16- and 17-year-olds must meet specific requirements

Specialized Classes

Family Literacy

Parents and their children (6 months to pre-K) participate in this unique combination of Adult Education classes and early childhood development activities

Adult Literacy

While focusing on foundational skills, students in the initial stages of literacy work one-on-one with a tutor to improve fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This Adult Education program is intended for emergent readers.

English Language Learners (ELL)

Adult Education ELL classes provide opportunities for adults to learn or improve English communication skills for life, family and work in our community.

Trainings

Adult Education trainings are comprised of three core areas; technical skills, employability skills, and academic skills and remediation.

These trainings yield certifications in high-demand occupations.

Additionally, Adult Education provides access to funding opportunities and scholarships. Those opportunities include:

Classroom Trainings:

  • Entry Welding (GMAW)
  • Logistics (CLA)
  • ParaProfessional

Certifications may differ as workforce demands change

Online Trainings:

Online classes are offered by Adult Education to allow students to study on their own schedule:

  • QuickBooks™
  • Logistics (CLA)
  • Medical Administration Assistant (CMAA)
