School Closing Procedures

The decision to close schools due to inclement weather is usually controversial and very rarely pleases everyone.

First and foremost, safety of our children and staff is the overriding factor in any decision whether to close schools or not.

Ideally, the decision on closing should be made the night before; and if the information is available, that is when the decision will be made and appropriate notification provided as early as possible. Frequently, however, the weather turns during the night and a decision cannot be made until very early in the morning. Throughout the night, information is exchanged between and among various city agencies, the weather bureau, transportation departments, and other school corporations. A very elaborate communications system is in place and is triggered as early as 2 a.m. The final decision is usually made by 5 a.m., and that decision will be made by the superintendent on the basis of all available information provided at that time.

The serious problem occurs when the weather turns for the worse after 5 a.m. By that time, our vehicles are beginning to move and the notification process would be too late for parents to make other arrangements, especially those who are employed. In the many cases, the problems that are created as a result of a late notification are far more serious than those that occur when school is kept open even in bad weather.

Although the decision is ultimately the superintendent’s to make, please understand that it is based on information gathered from a variety of sources and from individuals who are out on the streets assessing the situation from every conceivable aspect. We hope you will agree with whatever that decision may be.
